The Golden Rules of Disaster Recovery

Backups are a necessity- hardware and software fail, and other man made and natural disasters can and will happen.
Backups only work if they are reliable and performed daily.
Backups that require special hardware can not be recovered quickly.
Backups must be automatic, or they will not get done reliably.
Backups which depend on someone plugging in a drive or swapping tapes, disks, etc will not be done reliably.
Backup media must be encrypted and secured, so that only the owner of the data can retrieve it.
Backup media like disks and tape will not always be large enough to store an entire backup without changing media, and backups will not be complete.
Backups must be stored in a physically separate, secure location so it is not subject to the same natural or man-made disasters your PC faces.
Backups on USB or network drives will be affected by the same viruses that destroy your original data.
